Fitting In
Here are a few tips which should help newcomers settle comfortably in the Philippines.
Understand the Locals
-
Philippine society is hierarchical, so please always show respect and address police and government officials as ‘Po’ (sir/madam) even when speaking English (a friendly smile goes a long way, too).
-
Don’t become upset when Filipinos ask what you think are very personal questions even on first meeting. How old are you, how much money do you make etc., are all commonly asked questions.
-
Accept that people are different here, think differently, and act differently. The quicker you accept that the quicker you will learn to fit in, and the fewer hassles you’ll encounter. Try not to get upset or lose your temper.
Dress for Success
-
Keep yourself clean neat and tidy if you want to be accepted and respected by the locals because grimy, grungy looking expats embarrass them!
-
Always wear long trousers and a decent shirt if going to a government office.
-
Get yourself a decent Barong Tagalog for formal wear, parties and social functions such as weddings and baptisms (which you will be invited to regularly)
Remember the Niceties
-
To get things done, solve problems and have a good social life, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Network and learn to give and receive favors graciously.
-
Every time your patience is worn thin, try and back off and think twice before blowing your top.
-
Don’t seriously embarrass a Filipino. You will never be forgiven and some form of payback is almost inevitable.
-
Do the right thing by others and you will receive payment in kind. Giving and receiving favors is a way of life, so accept it and go with the flow.
-
Family is mega important, so if in a friend’s house, take care to be friendly and respectful, especially to the eldest members of the household.
-
Romance and Relationships
-
Nothing ventured, nothing gained - whether you’re fat and 40, bald and 50, or skinny and 60, smile and act with kindness and you will be pleasantly surprised to find real romance can be in the air.
-
Just remember that whatever you do, do it with your eyes wide open, give the head on your shoulders priority over the little head lower down, and enjoy your life! After all is said and done, you’re not a dickhead are you?
