Simple Tips to Improve Your Writing Skills

As the owner of a small publishing house, I review a number of submissions for articles, short stories and books. When I review submissions, I look for great content or a great underlying idea for technical or niche book. If it is a work of fiction, I look for good, flowing storylines; however, doing this is troublesome when poor writing skills make getting to the kernel of what the writer wants to say so excruciatingly difficult.

The problem is that things fall flat when whatever I’m reading is poorly written or simply not thought out and ordered correctly. Worse still from my perspective, an article or book may contain all the right elements, but silly typos, poor spelling and grammatical errors make reading an un-enjoyable chore.

One of the most frustrating things about badly written material is that many mistakes are so simple to avoid. So, whether it is an article, a book, a school essay or a letter to your mother, is always worthwhile putting a little more thought into what you are doing and the message you want to get across.

An easy way to increase the readability of anything you write is to remember these four simple guidelines:

1. Plan what to write, and follow the plan.
2. Remember the rules of Basic English
3. Write for clarity, using simple English words, not techno-speak.
4. Always check, and recheck, exactly what you have written.

It does not matter whether you use these as tips for essays, tips for better business writing, or just a way of improving your writing skills. If you follow these guidelines you will find that whatever the topic or purpose of your writing, it will be clearer and more easily understood by the reader.
