Spas and Parlors

Although it has no named style of massage associated with it, massages are a commonplace activity in the Philippines, from up-market Spas to the rather seedier massage parlors. So you must decide exactly what you want at the spa or parlor - a relaxing massage or a ‘relief’ massage - and chose the right establishment for your needs.

The belief in the curative powers of mineral waters goes back to prehistoric times. So given today’s busy lifestyles and stress levels, it is not surprising that modern day spas, places devoted to the well-being and rejuvenation of mind, body and spirit, have become so popular.

Today, the spa is a multi level experience as while most spas focus on various massage techniques, more up-market establishments also offer a variety of other services such as facials, aromatherapy, exfoliation, foot spa, and waxing. Rather than operate out of a dingy little room, professional spas have learned to move towards well appointed, pristinely clean environments with piped ‘forest bird’ or ‘tinkling water’ sound tracks designed to aid relaxation.

Spas also use staff with professional training, which generally ensures that you get the full benefits of the massage and leave relaxed and content, with or without receiving the more down-market establishment’s ‘happy ending’.

Living in the Philippines, and especially here in Angeles City and Subic we are blessed with a large number of spas and massage parlors, with spas and parlors that cater both for those seeking relaxation, and those more bothered about how the massage ends. Around Angeles there are low-cost masseurs available in the spas, parlors and for home or hotel room visits 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. We have everything available from large multi-franchise spa chains, right down to cheap-and-cheerful one-bed parlors, or the aforesaid home or room visits. Choice is only limited by your personal preferences.

So, why should you consider a massage and what kind of massage should you request?

Benefits of a Massage:

If you are seeking a massage for relaxation, medical research has shown that the benefits of massage include pain relief, and reduced levels of anxiety and depression. Aromatherapy has also been proven to stimulate the immune system. Believe it or not a good massage can even temporarily reduce blood pressure and heart rate (though admittedly there are some parlors in Angeles and Subic that can leave you with a faster heart rate – if that’s what you seek).

There are various types of massage available, but the most popular around Angeles and Subic are:

Shiatsu: Shiatsu or ‘Dry’ massage is an oriental therapy ("shi" meaning finger and "atsu" meaning pressure). Pressure is applied by thumbs, fingers and palms to your body’s energy meridians. At some Spas in Angeles City it is also common practice to have the masseuse ‘walk your back’, applying pressure to points on your back and legs as she strolls up and down.

Swedish: Swedish massage utilizes five styles of long, flowing strokes using oil or lotions to allow smooth movement and prevent heat friction. This type of massage is thought to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and aiding those with poor circulation. As oil or lotion is used, it is recommended that you only have this type of massage in establishments with good showers, as on leaving the parlor walking around under a thin film of oil can quickly becomes unpleasant in the hot and humid tropics.

Thai: Known in Thailand as Nuat phaen boran, (ancient/traditional massage) it actually originated in India. In its true form, Thai massage is based on ayurveda and yoga, with a technique that combines massage with yoga-like positions and stretching. While an extremely invigorating massage which leaves you feeling as though you’ve had a wonderful work out, you must ensure that the masseuse is qualified. An unqualified person who practices the stretching and pulling actions required can end up doing more harm than good.

If you are seeking a massage purely for the famed ‘happy ending,’ you should note that while these can be obtained in many small establishments, the masseurs in these parlors often have little or no training; so instead of an actual massage, you may well just receive an oily rub down (giving truth to the phrase ‘rub and tug’). Also be aware that Angeles has many Spas and parlors that have excellently trained masseurs that provide great massages – and nothing ‘extra.’
