Yacht Racing in Subic

altThere’s nothing quite so exhilarating as surging through the water in a yacht with it’s spinnaker aloft. It’s also fun, the camaraderie among sailors being legendary - as is the post regatta socializing as a liquid-filled fitting end to a busy day on the water.

This August there are two regattas being held by the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailors, (SAGS) in conjunction with the Subic Bay Yacht Club.

The first is the Ninoy Aquino Anniversary Day Regatta. This will be held in the waters off Subic Bay on August 21 and 22, followed a week later by the National Hero’s Day Regatta on August 28 and 29 . These events follow in the wake of the successful Independence Day Regatta in June. As that Regatta attracted 19 boats in a variety of classes, making it the largest Philippine–club boat event in Subic for many years, its hopefully a sign of ramping up in the sport locally.

The waters off Subic Bay provide largely untroubled sailing which adds to the enjoyment: clean, clear water, generally soft breezes and few large waves make it ideal for young and/or novice sailors to stretch their sea legs.

With a bit of luck you can participate in the regattas without a yacht. Boats of various size are available for rent or charter: and there is almost always a greater demand for crew at the Subic Bay Yacht Club than there are available bodies. To sign up, go to the SBYC by 8:00 a.m. for the Captain’s Briefing to discover which yacht you’ll be sailing on, but remember that yacht racing is an active sport, so don't volunteer expecting a quiet, relaxing jaunt around the bay.

If you want to photograph the races, for the best shots you really need to be out on the water; but you can watch from the beach in front of the Lighthouse Marina Resort Hotel, Moonbay Marina.
